Our mission
is
to educate and enhance the quality of life
of children, adolescents and families dealing with HIV.
The
mission was created by founding teen members.

Kids Council-Caregivers League (KC-CGL) is an
educational and quality of life network that provides information
about HIV to its members and the community.
Kids' Council-Caregivers' League is:
- Teens-- Teen-age members help design
their own programs as well as learn HIV facts, ways to educate the
community about the disease, legal rights and confidentiality.
Members also
participate in educational and life-skills workshops designed to
build self-esteem.
- Caregivers
-- Caregivers who join KC-CGL develop support networks, learn coping
skills and participate in knowledge-building seminars.
- Students and professionals
in training -- Participants 15 years and older, including
students, medical residents and fellows, educators and anyone
interested in pursuing the mission of KC.
-CGL can become Texas Children's
volunteers
with placement in KC-CGL. Kids' Council.
Volunteers are given the opportunity to foster greater
understanding in their communities about HIV/AIDS, learn about the
global impact of the disease and learn more about careers in HIV
health care.
- Professionals -- Experienced
health care professionals, including co-directors
Dr. Lenora M. Noroski and Theresa Aldape, LMSW, staff in Texas Children's Allergy and
Immunology Clinic and
Baylor Allergy and Immunology staff, along with community members from
various professions offer guidance and serve as resources to Kids
Council and its members.
The council holds monthly workshops to help teens and caregivers
understand HIV facts, develop community outreach projects and gain
coping skills. Participants help design educational materials and
drive the planning for workshop topics and community outreach events
including:
- Addicks Middle School -- Community
outreach program teaches HIV facts.
-
Ryan White

education workshops.
-
Writers in the Schools -- Teens and caregivers learn poetry
and writing skills.
- Magic Earvin Johnson -- Teens and
caregivers meet and learn HIV facts from Magic Johnson.
-
The Ensemble Theatre, Houston -- Teens and young adults
experience opportunities for life and career building through the
arts.
-

fostered through pen-pal project.
-

A key component of this educational
process is Freeze PlayTM,
a family friendly game geared toward teens and young adults. The
game is available for public use here on Texas Children's Web
site. Kids Council-Caregivers League members helped develop Freeze Play as a way to
teach themselves and their peers about HIV.
