Look beyond what you
think you know about Houston. The nation’s fourth-largest city offers a
rare combination of international sophistication and down-home Texas
charm. Houston is a study in contrasts – it’s home to technological
breakthroughs and warm, old-fashioned welcomes, the world’s best barbecue
and award-winning performing arts.
You won’t find any oil wells downtown or longhorns roving the streets, but
you will find world-class museums and approximately 15,000 seats in its
theater district. Houston is one of the few American cities with permanent
ballet, opera, symphony and theater companies performing year-round.
If sports is more your ticket, Houston offers
Astros baseball,
Texans football,
Rockets professional basketball teams,
Aeros hockey,
Dynamo
MLS soccer –
not to mention polo, lacrosse, marathons and bicycling.
Sports go beyond the spectator to include miles of jogging and bicycling
trails. Deep sea fishing and surfing are just 50 miles away on the Gulf
Coast. The Texas Hill Country, a short drive to the West, is perfect for
hiking, rock climbing and canoeing.
Houston’s cultural diversity adds to the city’s energy. Rich ethnic
backgrounds come together in the performing and visual arts, annual
festivals and a wide variety of restaurants. Houston’s citizens speak more
than 90 languages – and they all offer you a warm welcome.
Among the nation’s major metropolitan areas, Houston’s cost of living is
one of the lowest while its standard of living is high. Real-estate
options include high-rises, suburban family homes and restored bungalows.
Downtown, now enjoying a lively revitalization, is an energetic mix of
lofts, restaurants, shops, and entertainment and sports venues.
No matter what part of town you call home, you’ll find plenty of
transportation alternatives. Houstonians’ commute times are well below
national averages. The new
MetroRail system links the medical center with
downtown and other points.
Education is one of the city’s top priorities, which shows in the quality
of public and private schools. Some 240,000 students attend local
universities, including Rice University,
University of Houston,
University of St. Thomas,
Houston Baptist University,
Prairie View A&M College
of Nursing-Houston Center, and
TWU Institute of Health
Sciences-Houston.
The city’s subtropical climate is mild and filled with sunshine. Snow is
rare, and balmy days are plentiful. The average annual high temperature is
79 degrees (26 Celsius).
Discover Houston … you’ll be glad you did.
