HOUSTON – (Dec. 18, 2009) – For the sixth year in a row, airwaves were filled with the courageous stories of young cancer patients, former patients and their families for the fight against childhood cancer. Houstonians remained committed to raising awareness and funds to support pediatric patient care, education and research for cancer as they tuned into the participating stations, The New 93Q, Country Legends 97.1, 107.5 The Eagle and 106.9 The Point, and rallied together in an effort that raised $706,228 in gifts and pledges during the two-day Radiothon.

The money raised will help support innovative research and treatment advances aimed at curing and preventing childhood cancer. The funds will also facilitate the patient care and education at Texas Children's Cancer Center – the largest pediatric hematology and oncology center in the nation.

“The cost of conducting life-saving research is extraordinary and we are increasingly dependent on the giving spirit of those eager to help us work toward our goal of curing childhood cancer,” said Dr. David Poplack, director of Texas Children’s Cancer Center.

The success of the two-day Radiothon can be accredited to the support of the presenting sponsors, Cox-Radio-Houston, along with c-presenting sponsors Foresters and GDF SUEZ Energy Resources.

Without Texas Children’s partnerships with Cox Radio-Houston and co-presenting sponsors, Foresters and GDF SUEZ Energy Resources, the success of the event would never be possible.

“Their commitments to Texas Children's Cancer Center are tremendous,” noted John Scales, senior vice president of Development at Texas Children's Hospital. “Their philanthropic leadership in the Houston community set wonderful examples, and we are fortunate to have them as partners in our mission to heal sick children."
