HOUSTON – (June 3, 2010)
– Jewelry designer
Mindy Lam,
known for her floral-inspired Swarovski crystal creations, has
designed a unique commemorative pin that celebrates Texas Children’s
new maternity center as the “future site of miracles” when it opens
in 2011. Currently under construction in the Texas Medical Center,
the new facility will be one of the nation’s preeminent maternal and
newborn health centers, offering a continuum of family-centered
care, beginning before conception and continuing after delivery, all
housed in a single location. See more information on the
maternity center.
The specially designed Mindy Lam pin features a branch with two
delicate red blossoms, symbolizing mother and baby. The sparkling
red crystals and shape of the blooms beautifully echo the Texas
Children’s Hospital logo. Known for creating her designs in her
dreams as she sleeps, Lam’s design for the Texas Children’s pin was
inspired by nature. “Everything begins as a newborn, whether it is a
seed that grows into a tree, a bulb that becomes a flower or a
precious baby that is born into the world,” Lam said.
The maternity center’s opening will signal a new era for Texas
Children’s Hospital as it expands for the first time into
obstetrical care. The pin is intended as a special keepsake to
commemorate the miracles of life that will occur there during the
center’s first year.
“This is the perfect symbol for the family-centered care model that
we are uniquely offering in the Texas Medical Center, where mother
and baby are cared for together at all times, and bonding is
promoted from the first moments of life,” said Cris Daskevich,
senior vice president of Texas Children’s Hospital.
Like the Texas Children’s Hospital pin, Mindy Lam’s fanciful
creations are nature-inspired. With the spring/summer season’s focus
on floral-inspired fashions and accessories, Lam’s designs are
perfectly on trend and have recently been featured in Vogue Italia.
Lam’s special pin design for Texas Children’s Hospital was unveiled
at Houston fashion boutique TOOTSIES on Wednesday, June 2nd, at a
private party celebrating the maternity center and the completion of
this important construction milestone.
The celebratory event attended by more than 100 women featured a
fantasy Mindy Lam tree, adorned with the Texas Children’s pin and
many of Lam’s other beautiful crystal designs. Party guests sipped
and shopped at the event, with ten percent of sales benefiting Texas
Children’s Hospital. Glowing expectant moms provided informal
modeling of Mindy Lam’s designs.
With a large following of loyal Houston fans, Mindy Lam is an ideal
designer to partner with Texas Children’s Hospital in creating this
unique pin for the hospital’s “first year of miracles”. Lam is a
miracle herself, surviving necrotizing fasciitis, a rare bacterial
disease often called flesh-eating strep that is excruciatingly
painful and often leads to death. She began to create her jewelry to
help occupy her mind and hands during months of convalescence and
continued to create one-of-a-kind pieces and develop her technique.
Her first big break came when executives at Henri Bendel gave her an
exclusive showcase for her designs after the overwhelming success of
her first trunk show in the posh Fifth Avenue store. Taking their
cue from nature’s brilliance, Lam’s ethereal designs are carried in
TOOTSIES, Macy’s and select boutiques throughout the country. Her
jewelry is also featured in the shops at the Chicago Museum of
Contemporary Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her jewelry has
been profiled in the Sunday Style section of the New York Times,
Women’s Wear Daily, Modern Bride, House & Garden, Onyx, Solano
Magazine, Bridal Guide, Brides Magazine, Yellow Magazine, Teen
People and Accessories Magazine. To view all of Mindy Lam’s
