HOUSTON – (Mar. 25, 2010) –
Dr. David Poplack, director of the
Texas
Children’s Cancer Center and deputy director of Baylor College
of Medicine’s Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center, has won a $950,000 grant
to support survivors of pediatric cancer through his Passport for
Care Program.
Thanks to advances in patient care, more childhood
cancer patients than ever before are beating the disease and
thriving into adulthood. However, their journey isn’t over since
some survivors experience long-term impacts of pediatric cancer and
its treatments.

To help these survivors stay informed about the health issues
they may face, Dr. Poplack and his colleagues
Dr. Marc Horowitz and Dr. Michael Fordis developed Passport for
Care. This internet-based resource will provide childhood cancer
survivors and their physicians with detailed, individualized
information concerning the patient's treatment history and their
disease risks in adulthood.
By placing this information on a secure, protected Web site,
cancer researchers can provide updates on disease risks as they are
uncovered, while patients and their doctors can access it whenever
and wherever they need it.
