History of lung transplantation at Texas Children's

2002      Texas Children's Pediatric Lung Transplant Program receives United Network of Organ Sharing certification in July

In October, Shari M. becomes the program's first lung transplant recipient.

2003      Texas Children's Pediatric Lung Transplant Program's team performs six bilateral lung transplants on pediatric patients, making it the second busiest in the world.

2004      Texas Children's team performs the first pediatric double-lung and liver transplant in the southern and southwestern United States.

Texas Children's receives accreditation for a heart-lung transplant program.

2005      Texas Children's pediatric lung and heart transplant teams performs the hospital's first pediatric double-lung and heart transplant on a New Orleans teen.

Texas Children's Hospital becomes the most active pediatric lung transplant center in the world with 15 transplants.

Dr. Elidemir wins the coveted Alfred Soffer Award at the annual Chest 2005 meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians for his outstanding research.

2006      Texas Children's Hospital is once again the most active pediatric lung transplant program in the world with 16 transplants.

2007     In December, Texas Children's performed the first lung-kidney transplant in a person under the age of 18 in the United States; this was the 10th such surgery performed on a person of any age.

2008       First official training program in pediatric lung transplantation gets board approval from TSBM.

Texas Children's Hospital lung transplant program performs the most pediatric lung transplants again this year.

 

                First 3rd true re-do lung transplantation is performed successfully.
 

2009       First NIH funded multicenter research project starts. Dr. Elidemir is the principal investigator at Texas Children's Hospital.

 

2010      First heart-lung-liver transplant is performed on first pediatric recipient in the central United States.
