Texas Children’s Neurosurgery
Division
The Neurosurgery Division at Texas
Children’s Hospital provides clinical care for disorders
of the brain, spine and peripheral nervous system. We evaluate
outpatients as possible candidates for neurological surgery to treat
disorders that include congenital malformations of the brain and
spine, hydrocephalus, tumors of the brain, spine and peripheral
nerves, cerebrovascular and spinal vascular malformations, cranial
and craniofacial malformations, spinal deformities, and functional
disorders including epilepsy, movement disorders and spasticity.
Our program is one of the largest and most experienced pediatric
neurosurgery units in the United States and our board-certified,
internationally recognized pediatric neurosurgeon-scientists
complete more than 950 operating room procedures each year.
Texas Children’s is the first hospital, pediatric or adult, in the
world to use real-time MRI-guided
thermal imaging and laser technology to destroy lesions in the
brain that cause epilepsy. This new surgical approach offers a safer
and significantly less invasive alternative to craniotomy in
selected patients. Surgeries using this revolutionary MRI-guided
laser procedure have been performed at Texas Children’s Hospital on
pediatric epilepsy patients with widely varied types of brain
lesions and with a great deal of success in dramatically reducing or
eliminating epileptic seizures.
Our division collaborates in clinical and research projects with a
number of medical and surgical divisions, including
Neurology, Interventional
Neuroradiology,
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,
Otolaryngology,
Plastic Surgery,
Developmental
Pediatrics and
Adolescent Medicine.
