Fellowships and Residencies Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Instructorship
We offer a one-year pediatric cardiac intensive care fellowship to 4th year individuals interested in pursuing additional training in pediatric cardiovascular intensive care medicine. Candidates must have completed fellowships in pediatric critical care medicine or pediatric cardiology.
About the instructorship
The Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Instructorship offers a 12-month didactic and clinical training program to individuals interested in pursuing one year of additional training in pediatric cardiovascular intensive care medicine.
Our cardiovascular intensive care program provides a unique interface among critical care medicine, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, and cardiac anesthesia. Our instructorship provides hands-on experience in cardiac critical care from more than 1000 admissions per year, including pre-operative care of newborns with congenital heart disease, thoracic organ transplantation, ECMO, ventricular assist devices and one of the largest cardiomyopathy/heart failure populations in the country.
The clinical content is designed for the individual candidates’ previous experience and training and would focus on developing clinical knowledge and skills specifically in the area of pediatric cardiac critical care. The Sections of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine are the sites of NIH funded research training grants in cardiology and pulmonary development. Additionally, the fellowship provides a quality research experience available through Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.
The program is directed by Ronald A. Bronicki, MD with Natasha Afonso, MD, MPH and Nirica Borges MD as associate program directors. The program is coordinated by Debbie Cody.
Curriculum
Our curriculum is a mixture of didactic lectures, directed reading conferences, patient care conferences and problem based learning and simulation activities. The instructors and staff play an active role in both scheduling and participating in these conferences.
- Didactic interactive lecture series: Weekly sessions with Dr. Bronicki discussing cardiac physiology through case-based presentations on selected topics
- Case conferences: led by 4th year instructors twice weekly
- Instructor – Faculty rounds: weekly, discussing a wide breadth of clinical & non-clinical topics
- Monthly morbidity & mortality conferences
- Heart center Performance Rounds: Weekly
- Cardiac critical care research group: Weekly
- Monthly Heart center quality improvement conference
- Access to an extensive digital cardiac critical care literature repository and index with over 4000 manuscripts from PubMed
Rotations
Critical Care Medicine trained
- Cardiac intensive care as 4th year instructor: 3 months
- Cardiac intensive care as junior faculty: 3 months

- Echocardiography
- Heart failure
- Cardiac catheterization
- Electrophysiology
- Cardiology consult service
- Cardiac Anesthesia and Perfusion: 1 month
- Vacation: 1 month
Cardiology trained
- Cardiac intensive care as 4th year instructor: 3 months
