Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship
Texas Children’s Hospital is an internationally recognized children's hospital that is the largest pediatric hospital in the nation. Texas Children’s provides medical care in more than 40 pediatric subspecialties, hence, the depth and breadth of care services provided at Texas Children’s creates a rich learning environment. The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine section currently consists of over 80 full-time pediatric critical care, cardiac intensive care, and anesthesiology physicians.
Texas Children’s Hospital is the primary pediatric training site for Baylor College of Medicine, which has one of the largest ACGME accredited pediatric critical care medicine fellowship programs in the country. Baylor College of Medicine is committed to training academic leaders in pediatric critical care medicine. The fellowship program, led by Danny Castro, DO, is currently comprised of 21 pediatric critical care fellows. The primary clinical setting for fellows’ education occurs in the critical care units that are now housed in a new state-of-the-art tower that consists of 19 new floors for critical care and cardiac critical care as well as cardiovascular and high-acuity operating rooms. The new tower has a total of 132 ICU beds expanding over 7 floors. Furthermore, the new tower has a dedicated 11-bed neuro-ICU with integrated epilepsy monitoring, an 11-bed surgical ICU, as well as subspecialty cohorting of medical ICU patients making us "one of a kind" worldwide. Additionally, the cardiac ICU, with its 48 beds, is cohorted into 12 bed neonatal ICU, 12 bed Heart Failure ICU and 24 bed medical ICU with a new Adult Congenital Heart Disease unit that opened up in the fall of 2020. Finally, the tower is equipped with a helipad dedicated to the transport of critically ill patients.
The fellowship program includes a comprehensive curriculum that is a mixture of invited speakers, team- and case-based didactic lectures, directed reading conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences, and journal clubs. The fellows and faculty play an active role in both scheduling and participating in these conferences, which occur three times a week. In addition to conferences, fellows participate in simulation-based training to improve their clinical diagnostic as well as procedural skills. All fellows engage in a wide range of research (basic science, translational, clinical, qualitative and educational) according to the American Board of Pediatrics guidelines and requirements for fellowship training.
