Featured Courses
The courses offered at the Simulation Center at Texas Children’s Hospital
feature "real" pediatric and
obstetric scenarios ranging from labor and delivery to intubations to administration
of medication. Each expertly-designed course focuses on crisis management in pediatric
care, from neonatal to adolescence.
High-Fidelity Neonatal Resuscitation Program
This program provides a unique
learning experience for health care professionals who specialize in neonatal care.
Students must practice cognitive, technical and behavioral skills to effectively
resuscitate a mannequin in a wide range of emergency situations.
Note: Participants
must complete the online NRP exam on the AAP Web site before participation in the
course.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
The monthly PALS course
aids the pediatric health care provider in developing the knowledge and skills
necessary to manage critically ill infants and children,
resulting in improved outcomes.
These skills include:
- Recognition and treatment
of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest
- The systematic approach
to pediatric assessment
- Effective respiratory management
- Defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion
- Intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration
- Effective resuscitation team
dynamics
Simulation Instructor Training Program
This 2-day interactive course teaches participants how to develop and implement
effective simulation programs in their respective fields.
It covers:
- The history and context of
medical simulation
- Simulation scenario design
- Strategy behind conducting
effective simulations
- Debriefing skills
development
Acute Care Mock Codes
This monthly, pediatric in-situ simulation
utilizes high-fidelity mannequins
to simulate real-life medical
and communication challenges
associated with pediatric
resuscitation. Four scenarios are run each month
within an actual patient care environment
and there is participation by the entire health care team on that
unit. In
the debriefing, following the exercise, the team’s coordination and communication
are reviewed as well as the cognitive, behavioral and technical performance of individuals.
Neonatal Intensive Care Advanced Procedural Skills Training
This
is a quarterly skills workshop that focuses on critical neonatal procedures such
as intubation, bag-mask ventilation, central line placement, needle decompression,
chest tube placement and cardiac defibrillation. Participants include advanced
neonatal care providers, such as neonatal nurse practitioners and neonatal intensive
care fellows.
The Simulation Center at Texas
Children's Hospital is currently
developing the following courses.
